THE URBAN HOMESTEAD ON LIVING GREEN CHANNEL

PATH TO FREEDOM URBAN HOMESTEAD Part One

Host, Elizabeth Chambers, visits Path to Freedom, where the Dervaes family has steadily transformed their ordinary city lot in Pasadena, California, into an integral urban homestead. And, along the way, they are striving to become earth stewards, taking care of the precious gift we all have been given.

PATH TO FREEDOM URBAN HOMESTEAD Part Two

Since the mid ’80s, Jules Dervaes and his son and daughters have steadily worked away at transforming an ordinary city lot in Pasadena, California into an integral urban homestead.

On this 1/5 acre urban homestead the Dervaes have set out to live by example and inspire others to do the same. They are striving to be a sustainable homestead complete with solar energy, waste water management, growing food, and more.

PATH TO FREEDOM URBAN HOMESTEAD Part Three

Path to Freedom strives to inspire individuals to “think globally, act locally” by motivating them to live a simpler and more fulfilling life on the path to eco-stewardiship.

Part of Path to Freedom’s mission is to educate individuals and families to integrate sustainable living practices and methods into their daily lives. Our focus is on: organic gardening, solar cooking, composting and other back-to-basic, sustainable technologies and practices relating to the home environment.

And there’s more to come!  Stay tuned.

Good stuff and there were so many questions that I always wondered that were answered in these videos. I always wondered if you all longed to have a big farm where you can spread out a bit.
You are a true inspiration to my family.

Great interview. I have to admit that I am new to your site, but already inspired. I have a 200 square foot garden and because of your site I just bought a water bath canner to try to put up some of my harvest for the winter months. I’m also looking at how I can maximize what I grow in that 200 square feet of space and possibly considering expanding the garden even more. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is a wonderful set of interviews. I love hearing the background story from Jules. I just turned 40 in April, so I was thrilled to hear him say he moved to Pasadena when he was 40! I Hope to keep adding to my skills over the years like Jules…and I hope to inspire my four children as much as he has.
You have shown that the frugal life has an elegance and peacefulness deep down that can be easily missed by those who look only at the surface.
[p.s. Jules is quite charming on camera – I could listen to him all day.]

I have often wondered when all Jules children one day get their larger farms, what will happen to the homestead? Will Jules handle all himself or hire out? Will you all move to a larger farm one day but keep the Urban Homestead also and work them both? Will be interesting how life pans out for you all. And now since watching this latest videos, will Anais move to New Zealand?

Very enjoyable! Can’t wait until they post some more. I always feel like a cyberglutton saying it, but it is really fun to see your homestead and hear more about your lives.

I just finished watching the segments and weren’t they great! It was nice to get the inside scoop on the early days. Jules put everything so kindly and simply. I can learn from that! Some days I feel that we have so far to go and we don’t even know where we’re going exactly and it can be frustrating. Gradual change and innovation is the key.

One of my favorite interview quotes is Jules saying, “this is transitioning on a budget – not an instant makeover”…

That phrase captures the last ten years of my life!

Hey thank-you guys for your “green” inspiration. It is an interesting trend to watch, but I feel that with your philosophy can give this trend roots. So, thank-you once again for your phylisophical contribution to our thinking.
