The warmer weather has us all in a planting flurry. There’s a chance of rain expected this weekend which is great! Since it’s been warm and dry recently any rain now is a blessing before the long, hot summer.

March 14, 2008 at 12:46 pmThanks for posting these inspiring pics. I think I saw a shot a while back of an olla poking out of a bucket container — is that right? Do ollas work well in containers? I’d like to try it on my balcony. Earthboxes are too expensive!

March 14, 2008 at 12:49 pmHello LaVonne
Thanks for the positive comments. Glad you are enjoying the photos – it’s a lovely time of year and I can’t help but snap photos of everything!
Re your OLLA question. Actually, ollas work great in containers. They deliver water directly to the plant’s roots and from a fellow gardener and container olla user the plants seem healthier and bigger than their non olla counterparts.

March 14, 2008 at 2:07 pmI love your garden boxes!! I was wondering about the metal fencing type grid that seems to be sitting on top of some of them. Do you use this as a planting guide, or is it to help support the plants as they are growing?
BTW the Olla that I purchased from you last year worked wonderful in my garden last summer. I’ve just added 3 more for this year.

March 14, 2008 at 6:05 pmInspiration deluxe!! Love the photos of everything, but really can’t wait for the garden ones. I also wondered about the metal grid on top of the raised beds. I thought maybe it was to keep animals out, but that didn’t make alot of sense since the grids were large. Please tell.

March 14, 2008 at 9:19 pmHow do you grow your potatoes in pots? I’d love some more details (or even some pictures)
I tried hessian sacks last year, did you know they rot when sitting on the ground? We did get some lovely spuds though.
It continually amazes me that eveything you grow, grows so well! It is incredible what a healthy soil can do.
Do you have many problems with pest and diseases? I would assume not as only plants that are stressed tend to inundated with P&D problems.

The metal trellises are used to keep neighboring cats from using the newly planted beds as a litter box. Once the seedlings are established the trellises are removed and in the summer are used to grow cucumbers, squashes and beans.
Sarah, glad the ollas are working out. We hear nothing but positive comments regarding this ancient watering method.

March 16, 2008 at 5:41 pmI was wondering what you’re using to protect your raised bed boxes from damage and from attracting termites.
Are they just a resistant wood? Or did you guys use linseed oil?
I’m planning on starting my own raised bed garden in the backyard but I’m still working out the kinks.

The new beds are untreated Douglas Fir treated with natural orange oil and linseed oil is also a good choice.

Hope this helps and happy planting!
