Now that the flurry of earth celebratory activities have passed we had this weekend to ourselves. And boy did we take advantage of it – stepping away from all computer and public activity.
The goats were thrilled because that meant it was goat walking time on Saturday evening in the lower Arroyo Seco. Goats love routines and they missed their goats walks – and we did too!
On our walk we spotted patches of wild gooseberries, roses and more. We also noted the mexican elderberries sweet clusters of flowers knowing soon the bushes will be covered in tiny purple berries that we’ll wild harvest for wine.
We also brought along our canvas bags and collected some free goat food – oak leaves. Speaking of a goats diet, one of THE biggest misconceptions about goats is that they eat grass.
Of course, we keep telling people the opposite, but I’ll let one of the foremost experts on goats do the talking on this one.
“Goats are browsers, not grazers. That means that they don’t just eat grass, but they also like eating all kinds of leaves, weeds and bark.
Though goats will eat grass, if you are considering getting goats to be lawnmowers, you are going to be sorely disappointed, because they will eat your trees and roses before they will work on the lawn.” – Molly Smith
