These nifty paper shredders here on the urban homestead are low tech – no batteries and cords needed! Besides being useful for the overall composting and manure production at the urban homestead, our paper shredders are cute… they even give kisses (well, Blackberry does)

Yum, Sunday’s paper! Using her hoof, Blackberry starts shreddin’ Let ’em rrrrrrrrrip

Fairlight wants in on the action. Blackberry retreats to the bench. Fairlight, queen of herd, prefers to read the ‘Calendar’ section

Chomp, chomp. Sunday papers are indeed a good reading. After tearing the paper Fairlight does a bit of grooming. Gotta make my fur purdy.

Seriously!?!? Your girls eat newspapers? I am going to show these pictures to my two pygmy princesses who think they are too good to even eat blackberry vines for their roughage. It’s good sometimes to have finicky goats, when they get loose in the garden, but I’d love it if they’d take over the newsprint recycling.

    Hello Molly

Our goats absolutely LOVE the thorny blackberry brambles. Even roses too (ouch!) Can’t understand how they eat those thorns without hurting their mouths!

Just to clarify, we don’t actually feed our goats newspapers! When the goats our out in the yard and spot a newspaper left for recycling they love to shred and eat it! I wouldn’t recommend feeding it purposely to them, more like our goats enjoy the sound of the shreddin and with goats reputation for eating everything – paper qualifies.

If ever we lose a paper we can honestly say “THE GOAT ATE IT!”

i’d be worried about all the chemicals on the papers..chlorine, dyes, etc. that they’d ingest from eating them.

mine were gnawing at my skirt today when i was bottle feeding two od the kids. one managed to rip it, the little bugger!

i’ve learned though, in general, goats are pretty picky about what they will and won’t eat.

Glad you brought that up! That’s what happens when you have a zillion things going on and not able to write a lengthy-detailed post to cover all the bases. 😉

I should clarify, our goats really don’t “EAT” much paper. I just was making light of them liking to play with the paper and sometimes they’ll eat a few strips when they are given a chance (like on Sunday mornings!)

Our goats actually prefer greens, hay and oats but like to get a few “paper bites” here and there!
Thankfully the Sunday paper (LA Times) is printed with soy based inks.
