For centuries, every culture has been on a question for beauty; but, these days, our obsession with beauty is proving  to be toxic and deadly.  Every year, countless women get sick or die because of what they are putting on their skin and hair.   Looking good shouldn’t cost you your life or your wallet.

Here on at the urban homestead our beauty products are pretty basic. A few years ago, we starting looking to cultures who have been known for their gorgeous hair and luxurious skin. We figured if these women, who didn’t (or still don’t) have malls cluttered with  aisles of every conceivable cosmetic product on the planet, can still be stunning then that’s something we should look into. For me, though I’ve always been into making herbal beauty concoctions since I was a teenager, a few years ago I started to look into the Indian culture and the herbs and treatments they use. That path has led me to discover new and wonderful herbs and beauty solutions. My family and I had the opportunity to visit India last fall, with our little film ‘Homegrown Revolution‘. We saw women who had so “little” compared to the Western world but their hair, teeth and skin were stunning.  That  really ingrained the message that less is more. In fact, we don’t really need all that stuff that “They” would have us believe.  You can make wonderful products with simple ingredients that are commonly found in your kitchen cabinet or perhaps growing in your backyard.

Beauty treatments and solutions can be found not in fancy packing with a slew of ingredients, some which you can’t even pronounce. Unfortunately, many conventional beauty products are loaded with chemicals and are usually petroleum based while the “good stuff” is sometimes pricey.

So what’s a girl to do?  Know the dangers – check out this video.  It’s not just knowing where you food comes from but where all the other products that we use on daily basis too.

    As a teen, I would use egg white as a mask. Haven’t thought of that in years. But, recently the thought came to me that the deoderant I’m using isn’t healthy for me. Don’t know why I thought that but it came with the thought that for years I’ve been denying my pores from sweating under my arms, and could that be good for me? I remembered hearing about how some men used soap under their arms to raise their blood pressure to avoid the draft. I thought, If soap could do that, what does deoderant do?
    I have not stopped using it, cause I have not found a solution to the underarm problem yet aside from more showers but that still does not solve the daily problem, especially when I’m exercising… Anyone have any solution?

      Why do you use deoderant? To my opinion there’s no need for one. The sweat does not smell if you are healthy.
      I don’t use one for years, and I notice I smell when I sweat only if I eat something that is not good for me (for instance onion, garlic …), or if my immune system is out of balance, or I’m under stress. Luckily this does not happen often 🙂

        @Sabina Podjed: I agree, sweat shouldn’t smell if you are healthy. What you put in our body comes out in the pores. So if you aren’t eating healthy or under lots of stress (environmental, emotional, etc) your body will excrete the “waste” which could smell quite unpleasant. You can use apple cider vinegar rinses to freshen up too!

        I’m sorry but I have to disagree. I am part African and we have stronger body odor than Anglos, even when eating a healthy diet. This is something that really bothers me. Ive tried every type of “natural” product as well as conventional products and nothing works 100%. The closest I have come is a combination of clinical strength antiperspirant and scented deodorant/antiperspirant.

          I have used a crystal that you wet and apply under the arm..
          During summer months I apply backing soda after applying the crystal and I carry a small container of baking soda to re-apply if needed.

        I too have serious BO problems, since my first pregnancy I have stunk something chronic even after all our healthy lifestyle changes.
        We’re an organic homesteading family now and still I can stink up a storm.
        I have found the crystal stick to be AMAZING. I don’t smell for 24hours after application and in the middle of summer too!
        The best part is it’s a natural mineral that lasts years for just the $6 I spent on it. They work by leaving a thin mineral layer on the skin that doesn’t block pores, but stops bacteria growth that causes smell. You can even break the crystal and add it to water in a pump bottle to create a mineral spray if you prefer that to rubbing it on.

      Solution: Virgin Coconut Oil. It has a natural antibacterial, and makes your skin soft, too. I live in the south with heat index of 105F this week, plus humidity. It works for me. Most deoderant has aluminum in it (as does processed salt), which has been associated with breast cancer.

          @Anais, I like best the vinegar suggestion. I’m not sold on “the rock” as of yet. I thought of using perhaps a swab of alcohol but found it has the same result as the soap under the arms. Thanks for all the information and encouragement. Though I would like to think my body would not smell, our noses become accustomed to our smell and we can have an odor and not know it. I’ve been around others who have decided to go all natural and not use anything under their arms and have endured their reek. So at this point, after all your good advice, I believe I will stick with daily bathing and try the vinegar and hope that will be the answer. Thanks so much for all of you helping 🙂

            @Stacy: Good, glad to help. Actually you raised a good point. Why do folks think when you go “natural” that you have to reek. Seriously, we should be thinking of ourselves and others. Just because you don’t use deodorant you need not smell you a mile away! Don’t get me wrong, I love the smell of hard work but there’s a difference between work sweat and reeking. 😉

    Thanks for the great post. I’m still hoping you reveal your henna thing.

    Several times in the last few months, women I’ve known for years have commented that I look 20 years younger and ask what is my secret. My secret is to stop using any commercial “beauty” products, eat a diet rich in leafy greens (at least 2 lbs. a day), and make my own cleansing products. I use baking soda, yarrow and rosemary infusion, apple cider vinegar, and coconut oil on my hair. I wash with homemade soap and deodorize with homemade deodorant. At first I was oily and smelly. After a short time, everything calmed down. My hair is even getting less gray!

    I’m also making some fantastic house cleaning products with essential oils, baking soda, herbal infusions, and apple cider vinegar. I can’t believe how rewarding it is to take my money out of the pockets of big corporations. I’m not against capitalism but want to hold onto my assets.

      @Ginger: Sure, I’ll be (hopefully) getting around to that and the “no-poo” routine that I’ve been on for the last two plus years or so. There’s so much to post – ack! But it sounds like you got the basics covered!!!! I agree you can “take off” years but just going natural and eating a healthier diet. As a teenager I grew up reading the pioneering Adelle Davis books and this oldie but goodie book from Linda Clark called the “Secrets of Health & Beauty (now out of print)

    After suffering with allergies to many ingredients in common shampoos, and soaps on the shelves, I’ve finally gravitated to Burt’s Bees care products. I can understand every ingredient on their product labels — and they are all natural plant extracts. Their products are actually healing the damage done to me by the toxic stuff in other products. One of the biggest offenders for me was a chemical called Quaternium (it has several other names, too). Quaternium is a formaldehyde releaser and it is in every shampoo on the shelf — even baby shampoo — as well as eye cosmetics, foundations, etc. etc. etc. Would you knowingly bathe yourself or your children in formaldehyde? Johnson and Johnson are one of the biggest offenders!

    The soap I’ve found to be best for my face is Dead Sea Mud soap from Adovia. It is expensive, but the bars last a long time…and what price wouldn’t you pay for a safer, better product?

    The absolute best treatment for skin that I have ever found is oatmeal and lemon juice. I use the oatmeal bath because it is finely ground and it needs to be very fine. If you have a food processor or grinder you can easily do it yourself. I make a paste with warm water-add a few drops of lemon juice and put it on my freshly steamed skin (after a bath or place a towel over your head and hold your face about 6 in above a bowl of boiling water). This cleans out the pores and then rinse w/ cold water to close them. It is so mild it can be done several times a week if needed. It makes my skin soft and bright and makes me look refreshed and years younger.

    Oh yeah! I am excited to see that you will be addressing the natural beauty route. I’ve been making my own shampoo, facial moisturizer and exfolant for the last few years and my own home cleaning products for several years. However, I would be very interested in homemade skin care for acne prone skin as our boys are now at that age. They are using tea tree oil now, however, I think we will be doing an herbal liver cleanse as well. Any suggestions?

      @Kj, Try neem in powder. I have tried it for a facial mask (just add a bit water to the paste and apply it on the face) and hair mask. I also drink it quite regularly.

    I buy facial cream and shampoo from Prairieland Herbs (http://www.prairielandherbs.com/). I love the facial cream because it’s thick and oily. I have very dry skin, and I can’t figure out why most corporate products try not to be oily–that’s just what I need! I have short thick, hair, and I also use a small amount as a hair serum. (By the way, $12.50 for 2 ounces sounds like it’s expensive, but that amount lasts me for three months of twice-daily use.)

    I usually buy my soap from whoever’s selling it at whichever farmer’s market I happen to be at, but it can be hard to find makers who focus on making a good quality soap instead of just loading it up with scent. I suppose I need to buckle down to finding someone I like and making a special order for unscented.

      @Sarah: Thanks. I think you will be happily surprised with the results. You can start of making simple beauty treatments with what you probably have in your kitchen! Start off searching for apple cider vinegar, olive oil, cucumbers, avocados, honey, oatmeal, yogurt and even lemon juice.

    Well, i make my own deodorant. I started out with “the rock” in liquid form. It made me itch so bad i couldn’t stand it. I tried everything to “cure” that – lavender made it worse, as did baking soda. I finally stopped at zinc-based diaper cream. It works very well (I was using organic choices), but i had to be careful of my clothes. Eventually i began making my own – a mix of coconut oil, the diaper cream, lanolin, jojoba oil (solid), shea butter, & coco butter (i added some beeswax this last batch). I often will add a couple of drops of essential oil for scent, too. I melt all this in a double-boiler & then blend in some baking soda & cornstarch. I put this in a jar to use with my fingers in warm weather, or in cooler weather i use an old, empty, cleaned out solid deodorant dispenser. (This stuff gets gel-like at about 75F.) However, i’ve found that since i’ve cleaned up my diet i don’t get as stinky. But i work closely with people & feel more comfortable with something on.

    I tried no-poo last year & didn’t do so well with it, so i purchase shampoo from the health food store that doesn’t have any of the “nasties” in it.

    But my BEST discovery has been a moisturizer. We live at nearly 7,000 ft above sea level & the air is very, very dry. Nothing i found (including pure – greasy – lanolin or coconut oil) did the trick. My fingers were cracking & not healing & nothing seemed to help. I stumbled on this recipe online:

    1 part vegetable glycerin
    4 parts distilled water

    The woman said she’s diabetic & nothing – including prescription creams – worked for her, but that this did.

    My results have been wonderful, too. It is very liquid & i keep it in a spray bottle. But it occurred to me that aloe vera juice is very much like distilled water, & i usually use it instead. I’ve played with this recipe a lot & it is wonderful. I’ve tried it with aloe vera gel & that result is wonderful & extra silky, but much more work & has to be strained a few times thru cheese cloth.

    I use it as a moisturizer all over including my face & have had no more problems with dry skin. I share this with whoever will listen. Too much glycerin makes it sticky, but that is easy to resolve with a little more liquid. I add either rosewater or a few drops of essential oil for scent when i feel like it. The only people i know who don’t care for this are the ones who are used to a thick, creamy hand lotion. The watery spray just feels so weird for them.

The no-poo works for some and not others, really depends on your hair. I have REALLY, REALLY thick hair (thanks to my grandmother) and I’ve had nothing but compliments. I just wash with water and rinse with vinegar. Every night I put a bit of coconut oil. Whoops, have to save all this for the post. LOL

    That was a really great video! I learned things I did not know about labeling. I’m not sure that more govt and more regulations is the answer. People have to become informed and stop being Sheeple. It’s not rocket science to look up the list of ingredients and it doesn’t take a degree either. If something has the the root word for petro….well….it’s not the gov’ts responsibility to reeducate. Basically if one can’t pronounce a word…then it’s probably been made in a lab, a la not natural, even if claimed to be natural, but I didn’t know that about the organic label. Dang them.

    I’m excited to read all the beauty tips that your readers have left. I’m hoping my days will let up this fall so I can learn to make goats milk soap. We’ve found no other lip balm better than the ones I make with simple oils and beeswax. Yeah, it melts in the car on hot days…but it’s suppose to! Simple solution…don’t leave it in the car!

    I’ve been to India too and I love the people. I’m past the half century mark and have no wrinkles. I believe the tip for beauty comes from what we put in our mouth more than what we put on our face! Good fats and plenty of healthy fats will make the skin supple. In India they rubbed coconut oil on their hair and face after bathing! What could be more simple.

        @Anais, I hate to keep adding here…but what the heck. I’m now 2 wks NO POO! Can you believe it? I’m 52. It’s never too late to learn something new. I’m using ACV every morning and my hair has never been softer. My curls are fluffy and soft. I even bought some Henna and tested it today. Maybe tomorrow I’ll take that plunge!

    I have used olive oil, vinegar, coconut oil, and I make a tonic for my skin after washing my face with different teas and witch hazel chilled in the frig. I have used these for years, both of my grandma’s had beautiful skin until they passed away in the 80’s. I am 51, and everyone thinks that I am in my 30’s. I use goat milk soap in summer and a oatmeal soap in winter with a mud pack usually every week. I use Denver mud, and you can get this from Lehmans. I have extremly oily skin also.
    I have not been able to find deodorant also. I had thyroid cancer and my thyroid was removed, and since then I have an odor problem especially when working and sweating. So that is my next goal.

        Yes, everything is well, and busy, it has been a somewhat disappointng garden year, but I take what I can get, and do the best.
        I have used natural products as it was all that the families could afford, my depression era grandparents only had what was in the cupboard, and when I struck out on my own, I couldn’t afford to buy things either, so I had to resort to the pantry adventure which now proves that it was and is still the best way to go. I am going to try doing my own soap hopefully next spring, I can do it outside. I want to try some of my recipes that I have listed in my recipe journal, for my own use. I know what I want, I just have to master the soap art itself.

    I use Dr. Bonner’s for cleaning myself, and I used deodorant made from coconut oil, baking soda, cornstarch and essential oils. That’s it. My husband tells me I’m beautiful, and that’s all the endorsemnt I need for my minimalist beauty regimen ;).

    Hello, Me and my mom have been making our own toners , face mask for a while using herb extacts,oils ext,but most of the oils and extacts we grow in our own garden such as lavender but I don’t know how to make extacts or oils with thses herb can anyone help out

    I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about coconut oil. We have a 3 year old that has suffered for a long time with excema. Was on many perscriptions. We have put a halt to that and have completely changed his diet and oil him down with coconut oil. It has done wonders for him and is so much better than where we were. I now use it on my face. Think I’ll try it on my hair. Simple is better! And cheaper!

    I’m a huge fan of Green Beaver products – made in Quebec, parabin/sulfate free and uses only natural ingredients. I used to be a supporter of Burt’s Bees, but was so disappointed that they sold to Clorox!! When possible, homemade is the way to go – a favorite of mine is a honey/oatmeal/shredded apple facial scrub. Smells great and works wonders!

    What a fabulous article! You all are my “idols” as I journey to self sufficiency :).

    I began making my own lotion a few years ago. In the winter, the whole family uses plain Almond oil or Coconut Oil for our skin. In the summer, I make a lotion with almond, sesame, and avocado oil to give us a little sun protection.

    I have turned to henna, making my own shampoo, and am experimenting with the goal of being completely “home made” soon :).

        I did try the ‘No poo” for a while, but my hair ended up feeling dry, and a little as if it accruing “build up”. After 5 months or so, I gave up. Since then, I have made beer shampoo, several herb infusions.

    Thank you for posting this. Instead of Annie Leonard’s suggestion of petitioning for government agencies to take responsibility for my health, though, I’d like to just go ahead and take responsibility for it myself right now!

    I love using coconut oil, yogurt, honey, etc. on my skin. When I can afford to, I confess that I like to buy European brands like Dr. Hauschka and Weleda that are made with health in mind (the Germans in particular seem to have a lot of good products).

    Right now, I have some overripe red currants in the yard – I’m thinking of putting them into some witch hazel to use as a toner as they’re very high in antioxidants!

    It is an old interview with a lady who had hair past her ankles (just look at the photos!), and it describes parts of her regimen. Funny, sounds a LOT like what you do!!

    As a waitress, changing products can be tough – my ‘pits are frequently in someone’s face! I bathe a lot, try to eat well, and I’ve switched to the crystal deodorant. Once I’ve moved into a real house (with real kitchen and real storage!), I’ll try different formulas for making my own deodorants with coconut oil and baking soda. I can’t go empty-pit just yet, or be too adventurous, but that will come with a new job description. I’ll have to try the vinegar remedy!

    Because of the waitressing thing, I can’t do no-poo yet. However, I’ve been washing my hair less, and reducing the amount of shampoo each time. I figured out that any acne popping up while starting this method can be fixed pretty easily – One night, I sleep on one side of the pillow. The next night, I flip the pillow. Next night, pillowcase inside-out. Next night, flip again. Then, new pillowcase and start over. It’s so very helpful to prevent acne!! I can’t stress enough how a CLEAN pillowcase helps!

    Ok, note the stress on CLEAN? I use very little detergent now, and skip the dryer sheets. Magically, my husband’s eczema has nearly vanished. I’m almost done with this last (hypo-allergenic, unscented, green) bottle, and then Dr. Bronner’s will become our new laundry detergent. One day (again, with said real kitchen and real storage) I’ll make my own detergent.

    I use solid moisturizers, usually from Burt’s Bees – unfortunately, now that I know they are owned by Clorox, I will have to stop buying from them. There are some farmer’s market stalls that have the solid coconut oil moisturizers, so I imagine I’ll have to check them out until I can formulate my own. Drinking tons of water helps, and I usually get mistaken for 23 – I’m 35. I stopped having over-oily, nasty skin when I stopped using all the crap that “beauty insiders” told me I needed. I apply my face soap with a natural bristle face brush to exfoliate. I do it while I’m in the shower, and that’s it. I moisturize right after, and I’m usually ok until the next shower, now that I’ve gotten my skin to its normal balance.

    I’ve been saving my lip balm tubes to make my own balm from beeswax, but that’s my next project. I’ve been nabbing organic fat trimmings from my butcher and rendering the fat for soap. My man loves the vanilla one!

    There are so many steps to improve, but taking them one at a time will eventually get them all into daily habit and routine.

    I’ve spent 2 weeks at the seaside and I love spending time on the sun. To nourish my skin after sunbathing I used organic argan oil. My skin was like silk. Sometimes I’ve also cut aloe that is growing in our garden, squeezed out it’s content and applied it on my skin. Simple but effective. 🙂

When I was 24 a perm burned my hair off and sores onto my head. That was my last one. I understand that beautificans have the worst rates of cancer because of the chemical soup the are exposed to daily. I wonder if Black women have shorter longevity because they have bben taught that their hair must be permed & colored, skin whitened, etc even more so than white women. I had to learn to love my straight no longer blonde hair, and what haircuts flatter me. The only time I use products is when I have to go to work, and I give my hair and face a break on the days I am off.

    not sure if this was covered yet as i didn’t read through all of the comments, but a lot of the “crystal” or “rock” deodorants have aluminum in them. just a head’s up. i’ve found that using a little bit of tea tree oil really helps.
