“It’s not the tea … that makes teatime special, it’s the spirit of the tea party. It’s what happens when women or men or children make a place in their life for the rituals of sharing. It’s what happens when we bother with the little extras that feed the soul and nurture the senses and make space for unhurried conversation. And when that happens, it doesn’t really matter what fills the cups or holds the liquid. It really isn’t the tea. It’s the spirit of the tea party.”
— Emilie Barnes, “If Teacups Could Talk”
Whilst the world is watching events “across the pond” during the 2012 Olympics in London, we are having our own little Brit experience. We are now hosting the Homestead Tea Party. No, it’s not some kind of revolt against taxes or a spin off of the new American political party aka Tea Party. It’s just what it says it is–a tea party with tea and food with no political undercurrents or innuendos.
The idea just seemed to evolve. It all started with the beautiful tea servings we inherited from our grandmother. “What to do with such niceties?” was our question. It only made sense, along with our sense of responsibili-tea, to share it with others and put it to good use. Voila, teatime at the Urban Homestead was born.
We had had a few successful private tea parties at our home for some of our farm stand customers. People seemed to enjoy relaxing in the garden or dining in our vintage decor home while sipping tea on fine china. Either way, a person was transported into another world to rejuvenate themselves through this timeless custom.
We had been getting many requests to hold more tea parties but it was getting so hot here in So Cal. As if serendipitously orchestrated by Fate, Sis & I had our “light bulb moment” when someone donated some outdoor holiday lights to make our nighttime summer ice cream socials extra festive. Why not have an outdoor nighttime tea party on these cool California summer nights? So, we did it. Our Tea Act is now part of our history and it was a big success! Thanks, all, for attending and for your support. Maybe next month we can have some live musical entertainment (Tea and Trumpets, anyone?).
Check out our CALENDAR for upcoming events. We are putting on another “Mid Summer’s Tea” Wednesday Aug 8 (update: event is full) Next one coming in September stay tuned!
