Quoting one of our favorite authors here on the urban homestead… can you guess? Clue: not Laura Ingalls.
The heat is awful … and so early too!
What happen to “June Gloom.” Have we had any gloomy days this June? Granted July, August and September are the hottest months but June without gloom – what’s the world coming to?
The outdoor shower is visited often – need to take a ticket. The animals are taking shelter from the sun under the pomegranate trees and we humans do our best to keep the plants and animals alive and comfortable.
What’s your favorite ways to keeping cool….
Think cool ya’ll.

June 19, 2008 at 6:08 pmIt’s hard to relate to just now: we’re having abnormally cool temperatures and a fair a bit of rain. Our Junes are often hot and dry. Perhaps we could barter? 😉
PS: I love the photo!

June 19, 2008 at 6:09 pmAnais, I really enjoy your daily photos and always look forward to seeing whats new in the Dervaes back yard. What you are doing is so meaningful and inspiring – living and working at home – what a concept! Your whole website is facinating, and really gives me a lift when the News is so discouraging. Thanks, vicki

June 19, 2008 at 6:12 pmUMM, Let’s see… Last week we broke a record for coldest day in June. So, I guess my solution would be to move to the Pacific NW.

June 19, 2008 at 6:18 pmI have discovered that dishes get clean in cold water, too, so I have been using cold water. What a difference that makes. Keeping my hands in a sink full of ice cold well water and using cold water to rinse is pure bliss when it is hot out. Also, occasionally running the cold water over my hands and wrists and wiping my face and neck with a cold wash rag. I am also thinking of getting an olla and crocheting a hanger for it and hanging it, full of water, in front of a fan aimed right at me! 😀 I have to convince my beloved, though.
In Christ,
Ginny

June 19, 2008 at 6:45 pmI won’t say I’m jealous, exactly, that you have hot weather, but living in Maine, hot days are so rare that when we have one, it’s actually kind of nice. Most of the time, I’m in woolen socks and sweaters – even in the middle of “summer.”
I’ve found, though, that my comfort level is best regulated in my hands and feet. If I’m cold, I wear warm socks and gloves, and if I’m hot, I put my hands and feet in cool water. Works every time ;).

June 19, 2008 at 10:12 pmHanging wet sheet over windows and doorways, especially when a breeze is blowing will cool a room down enough to notice. Wearing wet clothing and keeping the head and feet wet.
Or, just working so hard that the sweat drips off like you’re in the shower. 🙂 That’s worked for me, but at some point the work does stop and more drinking water is needed!

June 20, 2008 at 6:19 amWell, down here in sweltering southeast Louisina with humidity that can kill a horse…and people for that matter, I load up the kiddos and drive down the road a piece and jump in Bogue Falaya River…..it’s COLD…yeah!!
Blessings,
Deidre

June 20, 2008 at 7:03 amYes, we’ve been dying over here lately. It’s always frustrating when our heat is paired with humidity – the swamp cooler is so much less effective when it’s not dry out, even if the plants prefer the wet.

June 26, 2008 at 10:47 amHello Ginny
None other than Little Britches – Ralph Moody. I believe the character DOC in the Dry Divide is attributed for this weather related phrase.
Have your read his books. The are classics!
Love & Blessings,
Anais

If you love Laura Ingalls series – you’ll love Ralph Moody book series. He’s a very colorful and humorous writer.
Once you start, you can’t put the book down…. so wait till all them chores or done! 😉
