HOME HOLIDAY

Going swimming

Come on in, the waters fine!

Jordanne’s joined by a water loving dog

Walking and talking. Sharing stories and trying to solve the world’s problems under the shade of glorious oaks.

Wisdom spotted on the side of the trail

Good eats, good friends

With gas prices the way they are more and more folks are finding fun closer to home, and, luckily, we don’t have to go or look very far.

We are so blessed that in less than 10 minutes from the urban homestead, one can be transported to a calm and peaceful world. With beautiful San Gabriels as our backdrop, one can commune with nature on one of the hundreds of trails that run along cool mountain streams, under oak covered canyons.

We’ve been finding solace and fun in these here mountains for nearly 20 years.  Sheesh, we practically grew up in ‘dem hills.

It was a perfect day for a hike (and swim!).  We spotted (and nibbled) loads of wild blackberries and figs.

For dinner at the urban homestead, we enjoyed a lovely “evening out” in the backyard with friends and family – not to mention homemade pizza topped with homegrown toppings.

Perfect!

How did you enjoy your “home holiday?”

That watering hole looks so inviting!!

Sounds like you had a great Labor Day!

We cooked out on the grill and enjoyed burgers (meat given to us) and hot dogs (both HB and hot dogs buns given to us by a friend who gets day old bread from a store), coleslaw (neighbor going on vacation and cleaned our her fridge so gave us lots of veggies) and veggie packs on the grill (again from veggies given to us by neighbor).

Afterwards, we enjoyed playing games (Dutch Blitz) and sitting around talking.

We enjoyed dinner in the neighborhood at a friends’ home with neighbors. We met a couple who are planning to move here, and enjoyed the company of other local gardeners. Most of vegetables served where home grown!!

We spent Monday walking around our new neighborhood and splurged by having a homemade ice cream sundae at one of the only remaining soda fountains in the US.

First off, wow, that waterfall looks right out of a movie! Beautiful. No wonder you love it there!

This weekend I labored, but had fun doing it.
    – I baked my first loaf of bread from scratch. Wasn’t perfect but it’s tasty!
    – Started pickling 4 pounds of cucumbers to make dill pickles for my wife.
    – Harvested, blanched and froze 4 pounds of green beans.

Oh, and I played with the kids and went to the zoo with the family. Good times!

I would love to see the pictures of the wild figs. I have only seen the ones at the nursery. Also if you get a chance can you tell us how many fig trees ya’ll have? I just bought 3 for a family of 5. Kindness

Making tomato sauce with local tomatoes and HG basil and trying sun-dried tomatoes for the first time! They’re still drying, hopefully only a couple more days!

Sounds like you have found the perfect balance of “wild” and “urban.” I feel fortunate to have a similar environment here – I live in the suburbs that are surrounded by woods, lush with wild blackberries and blueberries and I’m only 3 mi from the ocean … it doesn’t get much better ;).
