Justin made a canning jar run down to the local grocer around the corner, bringing back jars on the versatile Xtracycle for another batch of preserving.
We (Justin and I) had just finished unloading the canning jars when the 5.8 earthquake hit. I guess you can tell we are seasoned (too seasoned?) Californians. Justin casually stood there and said “about time!” He’s right! It’s been awhile (years) since we had any shaking going on.
Though we are a bit on edge and many of our animals are a bit unsettled (it’s their first earthquake) life goes on here the urban homestead.
Right now I’m waiting for the water to boil. What’s going into the jars today are homegrown figs and strawberries. It’s jammin’ time once again.
Thank you all for your comments of concern. We are fine, no damage to report, just rattled nerves!
Hope our Southland readers are all present and accounted for with no damage to report either.

July 29, 2008 at 11:48 amI felt it down here in San Diego. I was in the bathroom, and let’s just say it was starting to be strong enough that I sent a prayer up not to be found like that! Big relief when it stopped. I didn’t realize how big it was up there until I saw your post.

July 29, 2008 at 2:09 pmI was wondering what recipe you are using for the canning of the figs? I have a bunch on the tree this year. This is the first year we have them.
Thanks,
James

July 29, 2008 at 3:11 pmWe’re fine here, 50 miles away from the quake. Nice roller wasn’t it? And you’re right we haven’t had a real one for a while! In fact the last one we had that was ‘feelable’ I slept through, lol!

July 29, 2008 at 3:57 pmDoing OK here too, water sloshing around in the pool and fishtank, picture frames crooked, but all is well. It was a long one! I’m actually glad it came, since there’s a forecast for SoCal to have the BIG ONE with in the next 30 years (kinda vague donchathink?) This one helped released some built up stress. We all have to let go of stress somehow sometimes… this is Earth’s way. Let Earth be Earth!

July 29, 2008 at 6:05 pmI heard the news of the earthquake up here in Alberta and hoped everything was okay with you and your family Anais. I agree with Talithia, We’ve never met, but instantly thought of you and had to check to see if you had left an update on your website. Which you had, of course! 🙂
