The hills were alive with the sound of munching.

In fact, the only things that seemed missing Monday when a herd of goats climbed up a weed-choked lot in the Bunker Hill high-rise district were Julie Andrews and the Von Trapp family singers.

Leaders of the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency hired 100 goats to nibble away thick weeds on a steep slope at the corner of 4th and Hill streets, next to the Angels Flight funicular.

I heard about these kinds of rental several years ago, and was tickled by the simplicity of the solution. The LACoFD highly recommends them, even listing contractors on their website

The LAFD paired with CalTrans uses them extensively in places like highways

The Getty also uses goats for their steep and difficult terrain just off the 405

Whenever I drive on the freeway I always think a few goats or sheep would love to take care of all that grass.

I am curious as to how they contain the goats. We have a small farm and raise sheep, eggs, and produce for the farmer’s market. We used to have goats, but they are notorious for being able to escape (we had one we called Houdini) and they always found their way into the garden. Anyone know how they manage to keep them together?
