How Does Our Garden Grow?

Education is an admirable thing. But it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.- Oscar Wilde

We are still dealing with ongoing home construction that causes us to move plants, pots and stuff to one side of the house on week and to the other side the next. Otherwise the ongoing construction circus you can see, the garden is recovering nicely from one of the worst freezes we’ve had in over a century. However, we are going to have to deal with the lack of rain – only about 3″ has fallen this year when the normal is about 19″.    In the meantime, we’ll enjoy the garden while the weather’s cool, because once summer comes and there’s not been a deep soaking rain for months gardening is going to a bit more difficult than it has been in years.

In anticipation of summer…. the tomatoes are thigh high, peppers and eggplant are not far behind. The greens are growing lush, red strawberries peak out underneath the dark green leaves – we are eating well.

I have been following your web page for the last 12 months. I have always wanted what you have. My husband a city guy and me a country woman at heart(city raised)stuck in the city. Could you please help me get a little closer to what you have? I have already turned part of our yard into vegetable beds, strawberry bed, and 4 blueberry plants. I am in zone 6, right off the Ohio River in Ohio. Centrally located at the base of Ohio. I have always held dear to my hear your beliefs and have tried to put some of them into practice. What size are your vegetable beds? What type of wood do you use to surround your beds? I use cedar wood. Some of my beds are 3′ wide and some 4′ wide. We do not live in the best area of town and my husband is concerned with putting food plants on the street side of the house? Would you be willing to give us your layout? The trellises, and etc in an organized fashon?

You have inspired me to no end. We do not have a lot of money and can’t even attempt to get a cob oven or solar oven, but would like to do what we can.
Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated!!!
