His kinfolks said, ‘Jed, please give us a share!’ They said ‘Californey is the place we oughtta be’, so he and his family stayed near Beverly…Hills, that is.

Having a close kinship with Laura Ingalls and the Little House on the Prairie serie, a common joke around our household is that we are akin to another TV counterpart The Beverly Hillbillies :  Justin (Jethro) is big, strong and kind;  Jordanne, like Elly May, is a lover, caretaker of animals, bringing in all sorts of strays and hurt animals; Jules, as the head of the clan, got the notion to start off on this journey; Me, well, I am Granny who’s always brewing or whipping up vittles in the kitchen (not to mention  I got the granny boots and gumption to prove it.).

Heck, we did feel like some dang hillbillies when we first moved to Pasadena from our 10 acre plot in the South. Why? Cuz we took our countrified ways along with us to the city and we sure did get a few stares — for the longest while.

Well, times are a changing and there’re not many stares anymore; heck, there’re even tv folks that are interested.  Can you gander that!

A few months back, we got a call out of the blue from the Food Network – they wanted to drop off two chefs on the urban homestead to make a meal from what was growing out in our “back forty (feet)” and prepare the vittles (no possums were harmed) without all the modern new fangled gizmos and gadgets.  Instead harvesting what they needed and using the limited and home canned ingredients we had in the kitchen and preparing and cooking using little or no appliances, hybrid solar oven, bike blender and more.

We didn’t have much of part in the filming – just basically a location for a foodie challenge for these here chefs from the big city.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

They wanted us to throw a dinner party and of course we were like “no, problem we will invite our friends over for a homegrown shindig”  Ah, but the producers had different ideas – this was supposed to be a challenge and they asked if we could do better than that.   Ok.  So we had to find foodies that we’d like to impress so we called up and contacted LA area foodies and invited them to dinner.

The chefs were good sports and commented after that is was certainly a challenge but they loved every minute of it and were just so inspired to be transported back in time for the few hours that they were here.

Episode “It Ain’t Easy Being Green” airs Friday night (May 7) on the Food Network and features many a local foodie!   Thanks to all who participated at the dinner.

      Talithia – you can pick up a lot of shows online these days. I don’t have cable either. You might have to wait a week or two past the air date but you’ll be able to get it on Hulu or one of the other sites.

    This is so exciting! I don’t have cable, either so I’m also wondering how I’ll watch it-please share with the rest of us if you can find it online or something.
    I’m so happy that your family is getting this sort of attention, so well-deserved. I’m wondering if the chefs walked away with a MUCH greater appreciation for where the beautiful, fresh food they prepare actually comes from and what it really takes to grow it so well.

    I don’t have cable either, but I will be hunting for someone in my community who does, so I can watch. What a fun event that must have been.

    I love the fact that so many in this community say they don’t have cable or a tv! Just goes to show we’re all walking a similar path of simplicity. I am proud of what we are all doing to contribute to our collective journey.

    The chefs were very complimentary of the Urban Homestead and all of it’s goodness. Your place looked lovely and very tidy. I really enjoyed it, my only wish is that this “segment” would have been the entire hour and that the family would have been given more airtime. Jules was shown as the humble, lovely man that he is, Jordanne was very sweet and shown, appropriately, with the animals, Anais was only in a snippet showing canned goods and Justin was not shown. I believe the most airtime went to…Blackberry…who seemed to enjoy it, lol!

    The show did not do the Dervaes justice at all. I agree, the entire hour should have been devoted to the homestead and the family. The Beverly Hills “plastics” were such a turn off, and the entire show was Zzzzzzzzz. The Food Network really dropped the ball on this one. So sad. It could have been a really exciting show if more focus was put on the real “Path to Freedom” – the garden and all its glory. In addition, I don’t feel the chefs had a real appreciation for organic or sustainable living, which really showed.

    Your Homestead is gorgeous and I am glad you allowed them to film there! I agree with the others though, I wish the entire show had been just about your Homestead. They really needed to explain more about what they really were there to do. I was left with questions! The squash is amazing though, I am buying seeds for that one. The rest of the show was EEEEK! But I really loved watching when they showed your part. My Husband even joined me in watching, and now he is super fired up about the gardening around here!
    Hey Jordanne- I loved the parts they showed with you! Really had them wondering about the chicken on your shoulder. Very nice touch! You are very good with your animals, and it truly shows.
    Anais- I wish you had had more time, instead of just the quick shot of you showing the contents of the kitchen.
    I never saw Justin in the show, and we watched it twice to see what we missed the first time.
    Jules- You are an amazing, a very humble, down-to-earth man! Thank you!
