“Honor the Lord with your substance, and with the firstfruits of all your produce” (Proverbs 3:9).
First summer “fruits” of the season!
With all “first fruits” here on the urban homestead, we tithe the first of any garden harvest, offering the produce “back to the earth.” Giving thanks to the Creator who has blessed us with a bountiful harvest.

May 12, 2008 at 1:26 pmWhat a beautiful bounty of your first summer harvest. My stomach is rumbling just looking at those delicious specimens.
I’ve been following your site for the past few months but have never commented. I just want to tell you I look forward to reading your journal entries every morning and am always so amazed by your family and what you are doing. This city dweller keeps wanting to plant more and more on our patio because of you. Thank you for getting people like me more interested in the source of my food and tredding lightly on our Earth.

May 12, 2008 at 4:01 pmYou guys are so great…love to see the tithe! When you say give them back to the earth, what do you do exactly? We’re still learning how to apply these precepts to our growing things, too 🙂

Like Robbyn, I was wondering a few things about your tithing. I second the question of “what do you do exactly?” I also wanted to add my own question: how do you calculate what a tenth of your harvest is going to be?
My wife and I love what you’re doing and aspire to one day be self-sufficient as far as vegetables go. We have a long way to go though, considering our lot is 0.146 acres, our garden much less than that, and we just started gardening last year. But I guess these things don’t happen overnight.

May 12, 2008 at 7:44 pmIt’s amazing to see what y’all can harvest this early down in S. California. We can’t even think about tomatoes or peppers here in Napa until July or August! Now that I have a greenhouse, I am able to start my veggies earlier, but we do have such different seasons than you. I am happy to report I’ve just spotted tiny yellow squash emerging from some plants I started early, and it was from some seeds I saved from last year. So that feels “empowering”…And we are harvesting some incredible French butter and Romaine lettuce, and I can barely keep up with the snow and snap peas that grow so rapidly this time of year. My raspberries will start coming in the next few weeks, so that gets me excited too! I think my “tithe” actually goes to all the “critters” out there that get their fair share of the bounty in my yard!!
