Biodiesel “recipe” for coconut oil – Indonesia

Q. First of all, I would like to say how impressed I was looking at your step-by-step teaching on biodiesel in your website. Thank you.

I am currently in Indonesia and looking to implement a fully automated biodiesel line from coconut oil. Can you tell me where can I find the detail method for this?

Thank you and God bless,

A. One can make biodiesel using any type of oil.. The only problem you may encounter in making biodiesel is finding/acquiring methanol – is it available and/or affordable in Indonesia? You need approx 1/5th of methanol per gallon or liter of oil to make biodiesel.

The basic “recipe” that we use to make 1 liter of biodiesel is as follows:

220 milliliters methanol mixed with
4 grams of lye (for virgin oil – more for used waste oil)

The above solution (sodium methoxide) is added to 1 liter of hot oil (heated to 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit) and mixed together and let settle.

In the meantime, I recommend (if you haven’t already) visit the excellent online homebrew biodiesel tutorial located at A quick suggestion, before making a large batch, to first make a liter/blender batch (which we did before using the water heater processor) By making it in small batches you get a sense of what how it’s made and creating a successful reaction.
