Q. We found a mallard duckling in our yard. We are thinking of keeping it as a pet. What do they eat?
A. Just to make sure … have you seen the mother about? Sometimes she hides her babies while she looks for food. If you are certain the duckling is abandoned or lost, go ahead and keep it as a pet.
Mallards can eat lots of things. Although people feed ducks bread, it isn’t the best of diets for them. You can feed it to them as treats, but don’t make a diet out of it. The best thing to feed a baby duckling is salad greens such as lettuce, spinach, and other leafy vegetables. Ducks (and ducklings!) love snails, slugs, earthworms, pillbugs, grubs, etc.
Also, if you have a feed store nearby check to see if it sells WATERFOWL FOOD. If not, ask for CHICKEN MASH. This is a ground up grain that ducks like to eat. But make sure it is NOT medicated. Ask for the NON-MEDICATED. The medicated version of chicken mash can kill a duckling.
I hope I helped! Good luck to you. Let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
