Q. A friend of mine raises chickens in her backyard. Recently she has been having a problem with the red hens picking feathers and eventually pecking holes in the sides of some of the hens. What is causing this too happen? Any help or ideas that you have that I can share with her would be greatly appreciated.
A. It sounds like your chickens have resorted to cannibalistic tendencies. Can you think of a reason why they would do this? Usually it’s too crowded conditions, bright lights, something in the area they are frightened of, or they are picking on a hurt or sick hen.
Are they molting and have bare skin that is attracting the other hens?
