Chickens and cats

Q. I’d like to get a couple of hens for eggs, but can they defend themselves against a neighborhood cat? David

A. Most STANDARD ADULT chickens can defend themselves against a neighborhood cat. In fact, most cats I know of are pretty frightened of chickens. Chickens will charge and peck at a cat and scare the poor little thing out of its wits. Of course baby chickens WILL NEED to be protected from cats but adult hens are formidable. I have two cats that get along just fine with mine and the neighborhood cats either ignore my chickens are are scared to death of them.

In fact, I’ve never heard of a cat killing a full grown chicken. Not to say it has never happened, but it’s probably pretty rare. Dogs are more chicken killers than cats — they are the #1 killer of poultry.
