REAL FOOD, REAL SIMPLE: URBAN HOMESTEAD MEALS
Tabbouleh was what’s for lunch/dinner most of the week. No “007″ complaints on that one. Absolutely love this summer salad. It’s so simple and tasty and uses a good handful of mint that’s growing like gangbusters and needs to be “controlled.”

SATURDAY Breakfast – homemade pancakes with homeraised eggs Dinner -homemade flour tortillas, homemade spanish rice (homegrown green onions, preserved peppers) topped with organic cheese, black beans and cilantro SUNDAY Breakfast – homemade skillet granola Dinner – leftovers from Saturday MONDAY Breakfast – homemade [...]
WEEKLY MEAL WRAP UP
Making meals here on the urban homestead is all about using what’s growing in the garden, preserved (canned) in the pantry along with a few basic staples that we have to purchase. Over the last decade we’ve been able to whittle down our shopping list to a handful of a few basic “necessities.” Of course, [...]
WEEKLY MEAL WRAP UP
It’s broccoli time here on the urban homestead and our meals reflect what’s growing in the garden and what home preserves are stashed in the pantry. While our home canned goods are getting lower and lower the days are growing longer and hopefully warmer. With only a few short weeks of winter left another canning [...]
WEEKLY MEAL WRAP UP
Another pathetic job of taking photos of our meals last week. I guess I just can’t get excited over pictures of creamed green soup or even pumpkin soup for that matter. Soup is soup is soup – or that’s what I tell myself. Anyhow, enjoy another meal wrap up of what we ate last week. [...]
WEEKLY MEAL WRAP UP
It’s that time again for us to post what we ate last week. This is getting to be a regular feature here on the journal and quite a popular one too. I think it’s because people like it when you keep your life real. By posting our weekly eatings we are giving you a sense or [...]
WEEKLY MEAL WRAP UP
Lean Times This week, we been just too busy here at the urban homestead to have a “decent” breakfast. I know, I know – bad, bad, bad (but we can nibble on homegrown fruit inbetween chores and projects) What’s with no breakfast anyway? Due to our cutting back on buying any unnecessary “staple” ingredients we have [...]
WEEKLY MEAL WRAP UP
The summer garden is still puttering away. Pomegranates are now in season and are a welcome and tasty addition to our homegrown salads. Peppers, eggplant, beans, avocados are still growing strong and we even harvested a few pounds of tomatoes! The cow peas, otherwise know to us Southerns as crowder or black eye peas, are [...]
WEEKLY MEAL WRAP UP
Last week’s meal were, well, very simplistic and even nonexistent thanks to recent filming. Here’s what we urban homesteaders ate and enjoyed. I am hearing more and more from folks that they really like these meal posts – “keeping it real” as they say. Thanks for the postive comments everyone. SATURDAY Breakfast – homemade pancakes [...]
WEEKLY MEAL WRAP UP
The garden has yet to produce like gangbusters, but that’s good because otherwise I’d be crushed under a heavy load of so much fruits and veggies. Slow and steady harvests are good, but I have a feeling that August will be, God willing, a heavy harvest month. The weather is still cool for this time [...]
