HOMEMADE SOLAR OVEN

It’s summer and that means dusting off the solar ovens. No need to heat up the house hotter than it is for cooking simple foods.

CURTAINS!

As ya’ll know, we don’t have central heat and this old 1917 house can be drafty. Obviously, curtains on windows, especially thermal, can keep a room warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

HUNG OUT TO DRY

Well, since I have never had a dryer to use (except when visiting friends or traveling), I cannot comment on using a dryer from firsthand experience. All I know is that an electric clothes dryer is an energy hog.

HOMESTEAD FINANCES

You know that old saying “Self sufficient is as self sufficient does.” Ok, not really old but a new take on Gumpisms. How can we be “self sufficient” on only 1/10 of an acre (if an acre is $1.00 we are growing our groceries on 10 cents)?

While folks maybe writing down resolutions for a new year,  we [...]

MORNING HAS BROKEN

Justin is the earliest riser of us siblings.   He’s got a lot of energy and wants to get out in the garden first thing in the morn.  Yep, he’s a born farmer – got dirt in his veins. While we gals are still rubbing the sleepiness from our eyes,  Justin’s out checking if all’s well [...]
