GONE JAMMIN’
We kicked off the fruit season with a medley of jams – sweet grapefruit, strawberry rose, strawberry lemon verbena and just plain ol’ strawberry.
EARTH CARE WEEK
Although we couldn’t attend all the events we were invited to (sorry, folks, perhaps next year!) due to conflict of schedules with Holy Week, we still did have a jam packed week!!!
HOMESTEAD HELPER: POWDERED MILK
I remember my grandmother mixing powdered milk into regular whole milk as a way of making the milk go further. She used the instant dry milk and, back then, that did help to make the price of milk more economical.
MARCH HARVEST TALLY & GARDEN REPORT
It’s officially Spring and what a rocky start weather wise. We spiked into the 90’s for a few days and then dipped back under 60 with gray skies and drizzle.
URBAN HOME-STAND
Thank you for coming up and making our first( of hopefully many) “Homestand’s” a positive and successful event (estimated nearly 200 dropped in throughout the day). Also a big thank you to those who came bearing homemade gifts and complimentary comments. We appreciate your support!
JAMBOREE
There’s a jamboree of sorts going on here on the urban homestead kitchen. Whipping out preserves sweet and savory for customers at our Front Porch Farm Stand.
HOMEGROWN COMMUNITY
It’s been a busy week – a good week with three community events. Jordanne & I kicked off community outreach with canning classes at a local high school.
FALLING FROM OCTOBER SKY
For the past 3 days there’s been wet stuff falling from the sky! Yep, tis raining! Quite a dramatic change in that it’s 40 degrees COOLER than it was just last week!
PUT ‘EM UP! HARVEST KEEPER CHALLENGE
Across the nation, folks are down on their knees, hands dirty, seeds and trowel clench firming in hand determine to grow their own food. With hard work, effort and patience this hearty lot of homegrown soildiers will be blessed up to their eye balls in produce.
WHAT ARE YOU JAMMIN’ TO?
On the preservation front this week: pickling beets, apple pie filling, apple butter, elderberry jam, peaches in syrup, zucchini pickles and pumpkin butter (going to use those gorgeous pumpkins!). Next round should be tomato sauce and pickled peppers.
