Urban Homestead’s 2010 Year in Review

I know it’s a bit overdue (thanks to busy & rough start to the new year) and, honestly, I was putting it off because I am having a really BAD case of writer’s block…. but here it goes!

TAG-A-LONGS

Usually our backyard barnyard is relatively calm; yet, ever so often there is an occasional cackle of a laying hen. Back in the summer, the peaceful animal kingdom was broken by some unusual quacking.

AMY’S PASSING

Our little Amy peacefully passed away on last Tuesday evening.

Thank you all for your kind words, support during her injury rehabilitation and this latest egg laying issue. What she went thru was enough to stress a normal human out – let alone a wee little animal.

EVENTFUL SATURDAY

Yesterday we celebrated taking care of the creation and being good stewards. Not to mention a lovely day with wonderful people. I would say over 50 “familiar” looking folks came by to swap howdies, of course ask about Amy and inquire about our new projects that are happening on the urban homestead like grey water, [...]

CARING FOR AMY

Giving her warm baths during the egg binding crisis We’ve dealt with our fair share of problems & pain – having more animal increases the chance of one running into some illness, injury and even death.  That’s a farm life – nature gives and nature takes away. AROUND THE URBAN HOMESTEAD

“Earth is crammed with heaven And every bush aflame with God But only those who see take off their shoes.” — Elizabeth Barrett Browning, poet April just on whooshed by and brrr is it ccccold. Spring just up and left, it feels like December – we got over 5/8 of inch or rain and can [...]

DRESS & KEEP

This first work order to humans was “to dress and keep the garden,”  a command to do the work necessary  to tend a garden , along with a compassionate care over animals that reside there. Thank you all so very much for your care and concern over our lil Amy (named after a character in [...]

DUCK PROBLEMS

Amy enjoying the new fish pond It’s been a rough week.  Just as soon as we saw such a dramatic improvement in Amy (which made us so happy) there arose some complications – laying.   Good news, bad news sort of whiplash.  Good news she was looking and doing so much better but it’s been ages [...]

AMY UPDATE

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted how Amy’s doing these days. She’s doing well.  Slowly, oh so slowly, improving.   Thanks to concern and feedback from one of our readers after I wrote her describing Amy’s present symptoms, we’ve both come to the conclusion that she could be very well suffering from a very, very bad [...]
