WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE?

July 27, 2008

While our other fruit trees have been loaded, this year the lack of flowers this year on our decade old 10′ high citrus has us concerned.   Simply put very little flowers equals very little fruit.  Our two orange trees haven’t really fully recovered from the freeze of January  ‘07 (which hit the urban homestead hard)  It takes a few years for fruit trees to fully recover and bear a bountiful harvest.

BB, before bees, we’d harvest about 500 lbs from our two semi dwarf trees, with the bees we were anticipating an even bigger and better harvest but not this year.   Relying on such heavy weights and maturing fruit trees would really help us get to our goal of 10k on 1/10th acre.

So without our oldest and biggest fruit producers it’ll be interesting to find out close we can get to 10k.   Farmer D and J are sweating and it’s not just the heat.

Preservation Count

Last week was certainly a productive week here on the urban homestead.  Life is busy but good.

Three days - 35 quarts!  Yippie do da.

Coming up what we urban homesteaders ate last week…

Oh, and thanks for all the wonderful comments our family really appreciates hearing from our readers.  I did get around to responding to some, hopefully more today.

HOES NOT SWORDS

July 25, 2008

One Man, One Cow, One Planet is a film that takes us into the heart of the world’s most important renaissance – something that few of us are aware is even happening. Hoes rather than swords are at the frontline of a battle for agricultural control that is being fought over Indian soil. Its outcome could well determine the future of the entire earth. Using biodynamic-organic methods, farmers of India are reclaiming their lands and livelihood. At the same time they’re exposing the corporate mantra of infinite growth in a finite world for the environmental and human disaster that it really is.

PTF host film screening on Aug 3: Reserve today ( View full event details

END OF THE WEEK

July 25, 2008

There’s three entries this morning for your reading and eye candy enjoyment.

This morning we have a meeting with a local High School who wants PTF to put on a few programs with the kids this coming semester.  With wrapping up the week, bread baking, delivering produce orders to our clients, running errands and preparing for Sunday’s speaking engagement at a local church it’s certainly one of those busy days.

It’s (animal) feeding time, so back later….

PRESERVATION DAYS Con’t

July 25, 2008

Another canning day yesterday.  Yep three days in a row - we’re on a roll!  When the bounty calls you have to be there to answer - no ands, ifs or buts.

Yesterday’s preservation efforts were canning up some tomato sauce, marinated peppers and the rest of the ‘crop swap’ plums (the plums are absolutely delicious L - thanks!)

The goal this year is to fill the entire kitchen cupboards with homepreserved jars (and wine!)  - getting there!
