URBAN HOMESTEAD RECORD HARVEST!!!
If you've been following our harvest tally over the years here's a nifty little HARVEST GRAPH 2001-2009 to give you an idea how we've been at the fore front of urban agriculture food production.
These last few days, I too have been anxiously waiting the final harvest tally from Justin who's been going through the invoice books to tally the herbs and edible flower boxes that we harvested and sold (which came to 117 lbs for the year).
On a side note, we just couldn't figure out how to calculate the weight of 100 plus flats of wheat grass that we grew last year, so we just left them out of the final tally. Oh well.
The extremely wet and cold December affected our harvest numbers, and of course there are still loads of oranges on the trees but it wouldn't be right to strip the trees clean just to bump up the tally. We were tempted though!
So the numbers are in!
From our 1/10 acre growing grounds: Jan 130 lbs, Feb 139 lbs, Mar 396 lbs, Apr 555 lbs, May 590 lbs, Jun 730 lbs, Jul 1110 lbs, Aug 1228 lbs, Sep 638 lbs, Oct 388 lbs, Nov 492 lbs plus 117# herb and flower sales
December 2010
517 lbs of produce
14 duck eggs
0 chicken eggs
2010 Year Total
Our previous harvest record of 6200 has been officially broken .....
Drum roll please!
7,030 lbs of produce (fruits, vegetables and herbs only)
131 lbs of honey
307 duck eggs
706 chicken eggs

WELL DONE !!!!!
Hat's off to you all for "Living & Being the Example"!
<<<< Doing the Happy Dance .... Congratulations!!!!
Holy cow! That's fantastic! We're still steadily working on our soil and gaining more produce each year. What a wonderful example and encouragement your harvest totals are!!!
That is amazing!!! Great job to all of you and thank you for sharing your life here with all of us! Blessings to you!
7030 pounds of congratulations to you!
The inspiration that y'all have given me and mine is worth so much more!
When the planning began on our garden in 2009, my dream of 80% of our food grown by us on our 5238 sq feet within 5 years, was a lofty goal. Now I know it can be done. What we don't or can't grow due to space constraints, is already organically grown and/or within 40 miles of my house.
You have even inspired my old man to get rid of that front lawn. He's already done the layout for the raised beds. And his compost pile is 10x4 and 4 feet deep, thanks to the bunny herd.
Thanks to your family for the inspiration,
From the Willamette Valley
Congratulations, that's great! People couldn't believe 6000 pounds and now it's 7000. You guys really are such an inspiration. Happy new year to you. Nancy R
Congrats! THAT IS AWESOME! In fact... incredible! I reached 200 pounds in 2010 for the first time ever since starting a garden. Not much, but it definitely helped substitute store bought foods & helped cut down on driving to the grocery. And I know what Im eating too. Not irradiated, pasteurised, etc. My goal is to double last years totals. We'll see!
WOW and Congrats Guys !!! Such a wonderful example of what can be done with a lot of thought and a lot of sweat !!!
You All Rock !!!!!
Wow! We all thought 6000 pounds was amazing, but 7000?! Nicely done. Your hard work has been rewarded.
Incredible!!! This is so wonderful and inspiring. We cleared 1,000 pounds last year and our goal is 2,000 for this year. You continue to be our inspirations!
Thank you so much!
Yay! I'm so excited to have won a calendar - what is your e-mail address so that I can send you my mailing address?
@Anna,

Yahoo! Congratulations!!
What an achievement! Congratulations!
You guys are such a brilliant inspiration, well done!
You all are an inspiration to all gardeners. Congratulations to a job well done! May 2011 bring you and your family even more success in your farming endeavors.
Fantastic ! hard to believe that this could be done. Great Job
I hope you have celebrated with something sparkly. Your hard work and courage to follow a dream helps light the path for many of us. If more people would set aside the riding mower, not to mention the television remote, and get out and play in the dirt, just think how we could improve not just our own lives, but make a huge dent in the food supply for those in dire need. Let us march on every major urban area with our grubby kneed overalls and trowels in hand to improve access to open space to sow are seeds of change!
Best wishes from a Kansan!
You made me cry because I have a property similar in size to yours and it gives me hope for the future. It is inspiring to see what you do through out the year and has effected my own thoughts and families way of doing things around here, thoughts about consumerism vs waste etc, water usage, about our food intake, etc. Thank you for the hard work you do.
WOW that is just amazing!!! I guessed a little low and I was so hoping you would surpass it and you have!!! Congrats!!!
Congratulations! So awesome! Thanks for all your inspirational information and photos!
Imponente!
parabens,
Brian
This is really amazing and a testament to all of your hard work. Great job! You all are such an inspiration! -Carrie
WOW!!! Congratulations!!!!!!! ;0)
Congratulations!
I'm going to set my goal for 1000 lbs. in 2011. Wish me luck!
Congratulations! Such an inspiration! I was wondering if you have somewhere here on your site where you list what you plant and when. For example, when do you plant melons? And maybe those of us reading could follow along and try to keep up with you.
Happy New Year!
Yay!!! Congrats Dervaes family! You are so awesome! You keep inspiring us!
Rock on! one of our big goals is to weigh what we grow...I just calculated that we will have 189 square feet in production (maybe more if we get a "corn field" going) on our 1/4th of an acre. We live where winter can be cold (we have over a foot of snow right now) so we cannot quite hit your wonderful record bumper crop...Congrats!
Thank you for allowing all of us the opportunity to "watch" all the wonderful things you are doing. I don't post comments very often but I visit and love what I see. I spent several months last year working with our town's planning and zoning commission to clear the way to legally keep chickens. It took about 6 months. We now have 9 laying hens and we just had our first egg yesterday. I was soooooo excited! I've raised flocks before but always had to do it on my mother-in-laws property. It feels fabulous to have my flock now on my property. We also got two Nubian dairy goats this past summer and oh how we love them! Tomorrow I'm going to get some tomatoes started in flats on my kitchen counter. Thank you for the constant encouragement that you provide on this journal.
Dervaes,
What a plan and healthy eating, that others are able to follow! I have been inspiried and totally convenced by your web-site in growing you own sustaining foods. This is what we are to have been doing! People have been lured to the cities and have forgotten how to farm like our past anscestors. Thank you so much for having your web-site in full view. It is amazing!

My roommate and I did the unthinkable, we planted a garden. Now granted we got creative and used old blue childrens swimming pools that we drilled holes in the bottom of and they were really cute. But...... Nothing seem to want to grow. The only thing that made us feel better was that our neibor who has a half acre across the street didn't fare any better and my roommates sister in laws garden failed also. Was it just the season? I can't imagine all of us having a bad year but maybe we did.
Do you guys keep a more detailed tally of particular varieties and how they produced individually?
@CJ: Yes, we do. Every variety has a tally. We used to publish the varieties and lbs, but these days just don't have the time to transcribe for the the pages of our tally notebook
Drat!!! I'm trying the self reliant approach myself and each year it gets bigger and bigger. I just wanted an idea of what varieties really worked well for you, so I could attempt to duplicate that success.
