MUG SHOTS!
Oh, the personalities of the creatures here on the urban homestead – now we know what they did for entertainment in the “old days.” Forget cable, we got critters. Speaking of critters, like to send a BIG “Thank You” to Nor Cal homesteader Julia for passing along a dvd set of All Creatures Great & Small.
SUMMER SOIL BLOCKING
Now that the first summer planting flush is over, it’s time to get started on the second round of planting. Folks often ask us why is our small garden so productive. One of the main reasons is we have successful succession plantings. When one crop goes out, another one comes in.

We’ll wrap up a busy week with another pictorial dispatch from the homefront…. Word on the honey front is that we should be harvesting some soon – perhaps Sunday! Everyone can’t wait to try out Justin’s new “toy.” It’s a new stainless steel hand-cranked honey exacter – it’s a beaut.

The canning season here on the urban homestead has started with gusto! Though I have to admit I got a bit too enthusiastic and that caused the pickled garlic to turn a out of this world green/turquoise – not to mention turning me slightly red with embarrassment!

REAL FOOD, REAL SIMPLE: Weekly Meal Wrap Up
Whew doggie! It’s been a busy week here at the urban homestead. Busy with bees (getting ready to harvest some honey!), battling bad bugs, moving the tender greens to cooler spot in the yard and getting things ready for a major can-a-thon.

Spanky and the camera share a special relationship. He loves it and it loves him right back… Seriously, the cat turns on the charm like a lightbulb and struts his ginger-striped self around like he’s on some sort of catwalk.
URBAN AQUAPONICS NEWS
The tilapia fish are still alive and swimming and the plants that are growing in the nutrient laden water are growing quite well. I have to say the sound of water circulating right outside the kitchen is very soothing , pleasant sound.
