AROUND THE URBAN HOMESTEAD

Posted by Anais Dervaes

Winter, visited us briefly again last week.   Thankfully for us it didn't get too cold ( just windy and nippy)- but for others north of us the unseasonable cold snap along with hail, snow, freeze has devastated gardens and fruit crops.

The cold didn't last very long temps are going to warm up yet again.

Are you ready for another pictorial post?   Get your cuppa and pull up a chair - enjoy!

Lemons from a friend - thanks Duane!

Making marmalade

Floral, fruit salad

Daikon and French Breakfast Radishes

Sharing the bounty! Filling orders for our front porch farmstand home business - greens galore!

Brewing & then bottling up kombucha

Spring means fragrant herbs - lemony, lemon verbena.  mmmmmmm

Roasted beets

Cheerful wildflowers

And silly critters - giddy up!

Estella hitches a ride on Fairlight's back

Having enough "goat-play' for the day, Estella heads back to the chickens.

Hive maintenance

Checking in on the hives - good brood!

Change

If you've noticed the categories (right side bar) just got smaller.  Don't worry! We aren't deleting any of the last 10 years worth of postings but getting ready to launch the spiffy new blog.

The new blog will be cleaner, simpler and make all the wealth of information here easier to find.

Of course, we'll be "down" for a few days while we move, shuffle, wrangle, wrestle things over.  We'll keep you posted. In the meantime stay tuned for more happenings from the urban homestead.

  1. Love the pictures, as always! Thanks for helping keep me on track with my goals.

  2. I look forward to seeing the new blog! :)

  3. Thanks for all the great pictures. I stop by often to see what you are doing.

  4. My daughter was looking at the ingredients for one of her favorite tea blends today and saying that we could grow most of the herbs, except orange blossoms. This post, with mention of the lemon verbena, got me thinking of some alternatives. Thanks!

Roasted beets ... yum! I just planted my beet seeds the other day, and looking forward to the harvest ... in a few months ;) .

  5. I love all your pics. I always get so inspired after looking at your pics. That floral, fruit salad is so pretty and looks so yummy. And the beets..... I never thought of roasting them. I bet that makes them even better. I may have to plant some beets now!

  6. Love the pictures, thank you and keep them coming.
I do have to ask, what is the best way tho clean bottles? I am repurposing several bottles like the ones you use for the Kombucha and cannot always get them 'clean' any tips? I soak in hot water, use a brush (not always the best) and shake, shake, shake. I don't use bleach and will not run thru a dishwasher. Any suggestions?

  7. what was the name of the yellow wild flower that was shown on this post?

  8. The pictures of very motivational as usual. I saw your sneak peak of your new blog on facebook. I love the design!
