The Jr High School "Harvest Homesteaders" canathon finished up today.
This time around we made up a batch of peach jam and spiced apple sauce.
Peeling and cutting the apples. I told the girls they should get extra credit for peeling and chopping the apples with an eco-plastic knives!
One piece for the pot, one piece for me, one for the pot....
Mashing the peaches then putting the peach jam into sterilized jars.
Out come the peach jam from their water bath. Next round is the apple sauce.
Yesterday's batch of strawberry jam gets some trimmings which read "Happy Holidays! Homemade from Westridge School"
Apple sauce and peach jam. They jars will get nifty trimmings tomorrow and then off the jars go to a local food bank

All in all a good time and a good day's work. The local food bank is going to be surprised and what a joy it will be for these girls to give such a homemade blessing.

People who are down on their situation, recieving homemade jam. That really is wonderful. I grieve for all the people layed off of work! It's getting more like the depression era, and we all need to help, if possible. Thankyou so much!! C

This is a wonderful news worthy project!
I was wondering if the school does not teach Home Ec? Or is Home Ec limited to shopping and heating? My son's pet peave is when TV commercials refer to "home cooked" foods when they are selling precooked items that you just microwave or heat.
Fruits and jams are so easy and so tasty that they make a great jumping off place for new canners.

What a wonderful project! I really hope the food bank there will accept your lovely gift. In our area the food banks are not allowed to accept home canned good because of "liability issues". I help distribute food to the hungry and I know that homemade jam would be so appreciated by my wonderful "clients".
