BORN IN ACTIVISM
On Dec 18th, 9 years ago, Path to Freedom emerged on the Internet scene with a campaign to reunite father and son.
The site was influential in spearheading the campaign and featured on MSNBC, CNN, GRANMA and many, many other print media outlets all over the world.
In 2000, after four months of tireless campaigns, petitions (collecting over 21,000 signatures), and writing blitzes to senators, congress and heads of state and the final conclusion of the saga in late June, the site turned to feature pressing environmental and sustainability issues.
In late 2000 and early 2001, spurred on by the Y2K scenario and GMO contamination scare, we wanted to find a way that would be most proactive in our protest and continue our social and environmental activism.
What better way to do it than to show people how we have been living over the last two decades? Jules Dervaes believed that the path to change the world began right outside our back (and front) door. By showing our living protest, we could inspire others to be the change by living the solution.
Thus, the first ever urban homesteading website was launched in early 2001, followed by the first blog post in July of 2001.
Nearly a decade later, our family at PTF has brought about a new homegrown movement bringing, by our example, sustainability and local food issues to the forefront of today's popular culture. Thousands upon thousands have been encouraged to take a new path towards a sustainable future joining the modern urban homesteading movement of eco-pioneers.
Thank you to those who have supported our nine year long journey here online. In conclusion we like to say HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US! And we look forward to our tenth year as we continue to grow the future!

Congrats! I was recently reading through archives and read about the little Cuban boy who brought y'all to the web. I'm so glad to have you inspiring me in everything I do!
We reduced our electricity from 750 to 610 kwh last month! Yay!
Wow, I never knew you started out trying to help Elian home. I remember that time, thinking how insane it was not letting the boy go to his family just because politics didn't agree.
Well, I for one am glad you expanded beyond that, or came far, far closer to home. What you're doing now is far more inspriational to me and millions of others!
Thank you and Contratulations on your anniversary!
Indeed - congratulations. Long may you continue.
This is a tribute to my dad who regularly posted on this site, Gerry Medland from the uk, passed away on 14th Feb 2009, love you Dad, x Luke
