GROW WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED

Rerun

Last week Hallmark channel’s New Morning reran two clips from the urban homestead that were filmed in late January after the record breaking freeze where temperatures dipped below twenty degrees for nearly a week – Living Off The Land &How to Build A Simple Solar Oven (scroll down to the bottom of the page)

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn

Here on the urban homestead we are enjoying summer’s final farewell with splashes of brilliant and vibrant yellow.

Planting cool weather tomatoes around clay pot irrigation

Fall Plants

Cool weather tomatoes, peas, broccoli and and going into the garden.
It’s obvious the days are shorter; however, it’s always a challenge here on the urban homestead when to pull the plug on the summer crops and make way for the crops that will feed/see us through fall and winter.

It’s so good to have salad greens once again be apart of our diet. Even though they’ve been absent for a few weeks (thanks to that horrible heat wave) our greens can’t be beat. So fresh and tasty!   As one of our customers exclaimed, “they’re addicting!”

Growing food closer to home has been our mission for nearly a decade now. Repeating it day after day, year after year is certainly a challenge that we don’t take lightly.   This “grow where you are planted” challenge is certainly not a publicity stunt for a month or week to gain fleeting attention. For our family, this is real, this is life, this is a commitment to a journey to be the change by living the solution. It’s awesome to hear from readers who are deeply committed in pioneering their own path and growing closer to home.

I am very interested in your Ollas. I am wondering in good fertile well composted soil what kind of area could I expect to be able to irrigate with one? I have six raised garden beds that are 4×6, could one olla irrigate one of these if placed in the middle? Should certain plant be planted nearer than others?
Thanks for any help that you can give me.
P~
