READY, SET, GROW!

Posted by Anais Dervaes

Baby tomatoes

Tomatoes Are Up

Know what that means? Juicy tomatoes are just around the corner. Yum!
Like any urban farmer, there's hope that this year will be a bountiful one. This year especially, we are praying that we'll have a better tomato crop/harvest then last year.

Last season we had a 90% reduction in harvest due to the unusual combination of humidity and heat (thanks to global warming).

  1. Do you germinate your tomato seeds under grow lights?

  2. Yeah Tomatoes! Sending wishes for a great harvest this year... I'm craving tomatoes just thinking about them!

In past journal entries you've mentioned self-watering tomato (and strawberry) pots - would you share how you do that? I assume it's not with an olla.

And THANK YOU for all you do share - I've gotten so much inspiration and great information from you since I found your site about five months ago. Today I'm planting leafy greens and some flowers, using the planting times on the Moon calendar I got from the Peddler's Wagon. Thanks again!

  3. Hi Helen

Fortunately for us we live in a mild climate so we need to use grow lights. So, the answer is "no we don't germinate the tomatoes under grow lights." Instead, we have a sunny south the house where we have set up shelving where we start our seeds using natural sunlight.

  4. Hello Jen

Thanks for dropping us a line and posting. Seems that reader's comments have been dropping of these last couple months. Wonder why?

Anyhow, glad to hear you too have a hankering for some 'maters.

As for self watering containers. We bought a few Earthboxes about a decade ago and we are still using them - but they are expensive and since then have made our own using plastic tubs and rubbermaids. http://www.pathtofreedom.com/n...../t322.html (there are links to DIY ones at one of the last postings)

Thanks for the positive comments about the MOON CALENDAR - it's a really great calendar to have on hand and we love ours too!

    Happy (almost) spring!
