Jordanne Dervaes
Jordanne is a mix of old-fashioned girl and 21st century techie. When you think of Jordanne, first and foremost picture Jane Austin, then "Jane Austin meets Techie-Geek." She is blessed with a talent for design and, under the early tutelage of her artistic father, developed skills in website design.
As unlikely as it sounds for an eco-pioneer family, which believes that "a step backwards is progress," to have such a family member, it is a necessary oxymoron in order for our grassroots organization to accomplish its goals. For someone who has always felt that she was born in the wrong century, Jordanne handles the contradiction very well, viewing it as a necessary part of the urban homestead outreach.
However, it is not all techno-work for Jordanne on the homestead. Daily she assumes another, more passionate role, but this time think more "Jane Austen meets Ellie Mae (of "Beverly Hillbillies")." Jordanne loves her city farm critters, and is the family's full time wannabe vet and pet whisperer. Jordanne hand-raises her citified farm animals and treats them compassionately and holistically.
An inveterate reader, Jordanne rarely has the time these days to pursue her wide-ranging interests in history and literature that were cultivated during her "unschooling" years. But she finds moments here and there to keep up with Smithsonian and National Geographic magazines and the Sunday Los Angeles Times, as well as Hobby Farms and online news sources. Jordanne is famous for her encyclopedic knowledge of the movies and television shows the family has enjoyed together over the years and is called upon to settle disputes or remember who played what in which show.
Jordanne's creativity also expresses itself in her writing, another passion she dreams of taking up again in the future. She and Anais hope to publish a cookbook based on the many recipes they create for using what the urban homestead produces. Although most of her free time is used struggling to render order out of the chaos that is the byproduct of the quick growth of her family's popularity, she often manages to squeeze in some guitar practicing.
